What Rehab Does
Today, Rehab provides services to 8,000 people with disabilities and those who are socially marginalised throughout the 26 counties of Ireland. Rehab was established in 1949 to help people recovering from tuberculosis to rebuild their lives, regain their independence and to re-enter the workforce following their illness. From the humble beginnings of just a one room centre in Pleasants Street in Dublin, providing sewing skills to women who were recovering from tuberculosis Rehab has grown to become one of Ireland’s best known charities.
Over its 60 year history, Rehab has created a range of world class services designed to meet the needs of each and every individual, to help them to achieve their personal goals and to live their lives to the full. For some this can be gaining the skills to enable them to live independently, for others it may be the completion of training at their own pace to enable them to get a job. Rehab’s services transcend all age groups from young girls and boys with autism to elderly adults benefiting from our residential health and social care services.
Given the needs of our service users, they can be supported by Rehab for many years. Here is what they have to say:
"I was afraid to live on my own. Now I live in an apartment and I do my own washing, cooking and cleaning. I feel safe." Imelda who has an intellectual disability and avails of our Supported Accommodation service.
"Rehab provides an invaluable service for my family and others like us that helps us cope with the day-to-day care of our loved one. It would be hard to envisage how my family and I would survive without the staff and the service." Geraldine, mum of Louis, who attends the Red House Respite centre in Limerick.
Rehab provides short-term and long-term services to young people and adults with one or more of the following disabilities:
- physical, sensory and intellectual disabilities
- mental health difficulties
- autism
- acquired brain injury
We also provide a range of essential services to older people, carers and others who are marginalised. Our services are co-ordinated through Rehab’s three service delivery divisions: RehabCare, the National Learning Network and Rehab Enterprises.
